Dr. Justin Needham is a board-certified Ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract and refractive surgery, including LASIK, PRK, implantable collamer lenses, refractive lens exchange and cataract surgery. He also has experience with all types of advanced technology intraocular lenses as well as glaucoma laser treatments and Micro Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS).
Originally a native of Colorado, Dr. Needham has a degree in Biology from Whitman College. His studies included a year abroad in New Zealand and he has been traveling the globe ever since. After college, he was selected to attend our nation’s military medical school, Uniformed Services University, in Bethesda, MD, graduating near the top of his class. Upon completion of internship, Dr. Needham was trained as an Army Flight Surgeon and stationed in Ansbach, Germany providing primary medical care to the pilots and families of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.

While in Germany, Dr. Needham was selected ahead of his peers to attend ophthalmology residency at the most sought-after Army program, Madigan Army Medical Center, Ft. Lewis, WA. At Madigan, he trained under some of the most experienced cataract and refractive surgeons in the military.
Following residency training, Dr. Needham was immediately selected for a teaching position at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. In addition to providing comprehensive, cataract and refractive surgery in the clinic he also delivered lectures and taught cataract surgery to the ophthalmology residents.
His military service continued when he was promoted to Major and assigned as the Chief of Ophthalmology and of the Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program at Fort Stewart, GA. While assigned to Ft. Stewart, Dr. Needham has performed thousands of cataract and refractive surgery procedures on soldiers, retirees and family members from Ft. Stewart, Ft. Jackson, Ft. Benning, and surrounding military bases.
Following his service in the military, Dr. Needham and his family moved to the Atlanta area where he transitioned his career to private practice. Over the last 6 years he continued in his highly regarded cataract and refractive surgery practice, offering all types of cataract surgery, advanced technology lenses, glaucoma procedures, refractive lens exchange, laser vision correction, and implantable collamer lenses (ICL). He has been ranked as a Castle Connolly “Top Doctor” and is a certified instructor for the ICL procedure, training other surgeons to perform this life-changing refractive procedure.
As both an Ophthalmologist and LASIK patient himself, Dr. Needham, fully understands the incredible life changing benefits of refractive surgery. He is truly passionate about ensuring that each and every patient gets the appropriate surgery to match his or her lifestyle and vision goals. He creates a highly customized treatment program for every patient to ensure the safest and most accurate possible results.
Dr. Needham is very excited to be joining the Wilmington community along with his wife, Tristan, and children, Ivy and Oliver. He is looking forward to living near his extended family who have lived in Wilmington for many years. Outside of work he is actively involved with youth sports and the local scouting programs. You are also likely to run into him at the beach or along one of Wilmington’s many biking/hiking trails.
