December 30th, 2020 COVID-19 Safety Precautions Update
The health and well-being of our patients and staff is our highest priority.
We have adopted the following guidelines for our office:
- If you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the two weeks prior to your appointment, please call to reschedule.
- If you have a fever, flu-like symptoms or respiratory issues the day of your appointment, please call to reschedule.
- Do not arrive early for your appointment.
- Only the patient should come into the building. If you have a medical reason to have someone accompany you, please speak with a staff member.
- We require that everyone wear a mask, covering their nose and mouth, at all times while in the building.
- Our exam rooms and equipment are cleaned and disinfected before each patient.
- We are minimizing patient movement within our clinic, which may result in a longer than normal wait time to see the doctor.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

March 24, 2020 During these stressful times, we want to reassure you that the health and safety of our patients, staff and the community are our number one priority at Cape Fear Cataract & Cornea, P.A. The COVID-19 recommendations are changing daily.
Based on the recommendations of the CDC as well as CMS and the AAO, we are cancelling routine and elective eye exams in our clinic to reduce patient volume and ensure everyone’s safety. As directed, we are cancelling all elective procedures for the next 30 days to free up resources for acute COVID-19 patients. If you have a scheduled surgery or upcoming appointment, you will be contacted by a member of our staff.
Cape Fear Cataract & Cornea, P.A. is excited to offer TELEMEDICINE appointments to all patients. Although we cannot perform many of the tests you may still need at a later time, you can still schedule a virtual appointment with Dr. Groat to review your current condition, symptoms, and treatment options until you are able to visit us again in person. Please call us at 910-769-4590 to set up a time.
Telemedicine appointments are billed to your medical insurance. Copays, coinsurance and deductibles may apply as determined by your insurance.
Our office is currently CLOSED until we can safely reopen. We remain available to triage all urgent and emergent eye issues. Please call 910-769-4590 and follow the instructions to reach the doctor on call. Thank you for your understanding as we are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our patients and our team.
March 17, 2020 Patient safety – and the safety of our team members – is always our #1 priority at CAPE FEAR CATARACT & CORNEA, P.A. Information about COVID-19 is changing on a daily basis and we are continually reassessing how our practice should respond to increased risks.
At this time, our practice is restricting non-essential appointments for patients. This means that if you have a regular eye exam or any other type of appointment that can be safely delayed, we will be rescheduling those appointments for a later date. If you have not already been contacted by our staff regarding your appointment, please call us directly at 910-769-4590 to verify if your appointment is still on.
At this time, we will still accept patients into our facility with urgent problems. However, if you do have an urgent problem but are experiencing a respiratory illness or other symptoms of the coronavirus, we ask that you please contact us prior to coming into our facility. While we are committed to helping save vision of our patients, we must be responsible about keeping our other patients and our staff healthy and reducing the risk of infection.
Please understand that we are all trying to navigate the best ways to handle this dynamic situation. We are receiving updates from the American Academy of Ophthalmology as well as Centers for Disease Control so we can make the most educated decisions on how to provide or restrict patient care. We appreciate your patience as we all work through this situation.
